4th August 1897 first Ghanaian lawyer, John Mensah Sarbah, pioneering Pan-Africanist Joseph Casely Hayford, Peter Awoonor Renner, Jacob W. Sey, George Hughes, J. P. Brown and others established the Aborigines Rights Protection Society in Cape Coast.
