Gbagbo Must Concede Defeat...I'm Surprised By His Actions – Kufuor
Written by www.peacefmonline.com Thursday, 09 December 2010 13:09
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor says the decision by Laurent Gbagbo to still cling onto power even after the Electoral Commission in Cote D’Ivoire had declared his opponent; Alassane Ouattarathe winner is unfortunate, adding that it is disappointing that Mr. Gbagbo is refusing to see the clear handwritings on the wall.
Speaking in an interview during Peace FM News@12 Mr. Kufuor was emphatic that the embattled Ivorian leader has no choice than to step aside and give peace a chance since its obvious Ivorians do not want him again as their President again.
“The ECOWAS looked at the votes and they realized Ouattara won so I completely support ECOWAS asking Gbagbo to step aside for Ouattara to take his seat. Supremacy is vested in the people and they voted for Ouattara and there is a clear cut between their percentages considering the figures certified by the Electoral Commission in Cote D’Ivoire. I am wondering how Gbagbo can possibly compare over 54% with 46%, it is a clear loss for him,” he said.
He continued: “If the constitutional court had anything to say, they should have proved that the EC was lying and that it is not true that the majority of the people voted for Ouattara. But the constitutional court did not even give the EC the chance to read the results. For Cote D’Ivoire to regain its normalcy, let us go with what the EC said as the ECOWAS has intervened, and the one who got more wins the presidency,” Ghana’s former President said.
Mr. Kufuor, who lauded ECOWAS for its effort to restore order in Cote D’Ivoire, kicked against the idea of power sharing as a solution to the Ivorian impasse, describing it as a hindrance to peace and tranquility.
Touching on the 2012 general elections, the former President suggested the introduction of the Electronic Voting (E-voting) system to facilitate transparency. He believes that E-voting will be one of the best things to have happened in the country’s electoral system, acknowledging that though it may be expensive, it would bring about peace and development, which are priceless.
“I support the idea that we introduce electronic voting so we use it for the 2012 election, the machine will show anything clearly. Nobody will have to go to his room and conjure figures and bring them out, there is no manipulation in e-voting and it wouldn’t take us several days to decide on who won what,” he noted.
Former President Kufuor celebrated his 72nd birthday on Wednesday December 08, 2010.
